Hibiscus - Also known as the pua alo, this flower is most recognized as the state flower of Hawai'i. This island treasure is large in appearance, rich in color, and grows profusely throughout the islands. Most beautiful in bloom, it is favored as an adornment for the hair.
Plumeria - Fondly known as the puamelia, this lovely pua (flower) is most popular with the locals. Small, sweet in fragrance and vibrant in color, this flower is favored in lei making. The strings of plumeria lei adorning each girl as she dances the hula so gracefully is surely a sight to be seen only in Hawai'i.
Tiare - The Tahitian gardenia is also a favorite in the islands. This lovely flower has an alluring scent and is worn singularly behind the right or left ear. Right if you're single, left if you're taken.
Laua'e - This popular fern flourishes in the lush uplands of Hawai'i. Its rich green hues and intricate detail make it the choice among Hawaiian foliage and the staple of all decorations and adornments. The laua'e is the perfect accent to every Hawaiian flower and will provide a gorgeous background for your scrapbook page or art project.
Monstera - A larger fern, commonly used in Hawaiian decor, the beautiful leaves of this study plant are dark green in color and can be found in almost every fresh tropical arrangement.
Honu - The Hawaiian word for turtle, the petroglyphic version of this rare and endangered species has become a popular symbol of Hawai'i, yet it has many culturally significant ties to the Hawaiian people. It is a graceful creature, reminiscent of the beautiful ocean life that surrounds our island home.
Lauhala - The Hawaiian word for the leaves of the pandanus tree, the lauhala is an island favorite. Treasured for its durability and versatility, the lauhala was a necessity to the Hawaiian people in ancient times. After drying and stripping the leaves, they were used by artisans and common folk alike for everyday items such as sleeping mats, baskets and fans. The braided material has become a popular trend in modern island fashion and is commonly used to make purses, wallets and other accessories.
Palaka - Derived during the plantation era in Hawaii's history, this "Hawaiian plaid" design first came about in the late 19th and 20th centuries, when the sturdy checkered blue and white denim became the standard plantation work shirt throughout the islands. No longer used as a uniform today, the palaka design has maintained its popularity and is used in a variety of colors in traditional island decor and fashion for both men and women.
